Once you’ve chosen the number of lessons you’d like in your Bright Horizons account, we’ll send you an email with a quick questionnaire to help match you with a tutor. If we don’t hear back from you, we’ll give you a call.
Then our friendly Matching Team will find you a tutor that suits your needs and schedule. Once you’ve chosen your favourite, you can book in lessons yourself (up to a month in advance) in your account using your Bright Horizons credit.
Getting started is easy...
Lessons take place in our purpose-built platform, which has a suite of subject-specific tools to engage your child. It’s all easy to use and progress is automatically saved between lessons. Tutors and students can message each other to plan what they’ll cover, or ask questions between lessons. Plus there’s face-to-face video. All interaction is monitored for safeguarding purposes.
You’ll also get access to tonnes of learning resources to support their learning, as well as the lesson recordings to watch back for revision. Simply set a time, and all your child needs to do is get comfortable and open their laptop. Our tutors will take it from there.
How do I find the right tutor?
After your call with our dedicated matching team and based on what you’ve told us is important to you, we’ll narrow down a tutor for you. Plus our friendly support team is on hand every day of the week to help you.
What are the tutors like?
We handpick and train each and every one of our tutors, following a thorough assessment process. Only 1 in 8 applicants make the cut.
All of our tutors are…
What are the benefits of online tutoring?
There are plenty of reasons why over 400,000 families have opted for online lessons with our tutors. Here are just a few we hear over and over again:
It’s available on demand. You’ll save time, money and hassle travelling to your tutor. We’ll set you up with a tutor. All you need to do is set a time, and log in.
It gives you choice. With us you’ll have 9,000 tutors across the UK at your fingertips. You’ll never be without support and can choose the right tutor, not just one who’s nearby.
It’s proven to work. On average, students increase by a whole grade in a term. Our online lesson space is far more engaging than your standard video conferencing tool.
Does the tutoring align with the different curriculums in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland?
Yes, when you fill out our questionnaire, you can tell us which curriculum you’d like teaching in, and we’ll find a tutor that has experience with it.
My child has a Special Educational Need. Can they benefit from using 1-1 tutoring?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors have taken our SEN training to tailor their teaching style to unique needs and styles. And our online lesson space has a bunch of features designed to support students with SEN such as:
Plus, our tutors are just a few years ahead of their students. Their closeness in age makes them uniquely qualified to engage and motivate their students.
If you’re looking for a tutor with SEN experience, just let our Matching Team know and they’ll put together a shortlist for you to choose from.
How do I get my child ready for their online session and keep them safe online?
We recommend doing a couple of things to get ready for your first lesson:
And finally we recommend logging in 5-10 minutes before your lesson to check your internet connection is stable, and your camera and mic are working. That way you don’t waste valuable lesson time.
In terms of safety, our site has a number of checks in place to ensure that you and your child remain in a safe environment at all times. Please see our online safety guidelines.
Are tutors DBS checked and trained?
Yes, all of our tutors have an enhanced DBS check. Online safety is our utmost priority. Here’s a bit more information about our selection process:
All tutors are current university students, or recent graduates and have achieved an A*-B at A Level or equivalent in the subject they’re tutoring.
We complete ID and right-to-work checks, as well as interviewing prospective tutors to understand their skills and motivations. We check for professionalism, communication and teaching experience as well as an understanding of safeguarding.
We also ask them to provide two references, complete training and agree to our code of conduct.
How many sessions should I book at once?
You can book lessons a month in advance, and we recommend asking your tutor about how many they’d recommend (usually 1-2 per week) and their availability. It’s a good idea to agree on dates in advance to lock in the time together before things come up.
Are same-day lessons available?
Yes! Though it’s best to check in with your tutor of choice beforehand as schedules vary.
When should my tuition begin?
As soon as you’ve chosen a tutor, you can get started right away. Once a booking has been made, your child’s tuition sessions must begin within a month. You cannot make a booking more than a month in advance of wanting to begin tuition.
How do I cancel lessons?
If you need to cancel a lesson, you can do that from your account with more than 24 hours notice and you won’t lose that lesson credit.
If you know you can't attend a lesson that starts within the next 24 working hours, message your tutor directly to let them know and propose a new date/time that works.
Your Bright Horizons lesson credits will expire after 12 months.
How can I reschedule lessons?
To reschedule a lesson, you’ll need to do so a few days in advance. Here’s how:
Will my rescheduled session be with the same tutor?
Yes, you’ll just need to discuss a new time that works for both of you.
Can I reschedule a session if I miss it?
If you miss a lesson, you won’t be able to keep the credit to reschedule it. Your tutor will have saved the time for you, and prepared ahead, so will be compensated.
Can I take a break for a holiday or an extended break from my booked sessions?
Yes you can. Any unused lesson credit will automatically roll over to the next month. However, if they’re not used in that month, they’ll expire. But you can always top up your credits through Bright Horizons.
I have multiple children, can they have the same tutor or be in the same tutoring session?
You can create multiple student accounts for your children, but we don’t tend to recommend sharing lessons.
Mainly because our online lesson space is designed for 1-1 learning, so multiple students would have to share one device (they can’t join on separate devices). Of course, this is at the discretion of the tutor so we recommend discussing your situation and needs with them directly.
What are your opening hours?
You can book lessons at any time between 8am and 10pm UK time. And our support team are available 7 days a week (8am-7pm during the week, and 9am-5pm at the weekend).
Can I access my sessions if I'm not in the UK?
Yes, so long as the connection is secure and stable. It’s worth testing this out ahead of the lesson starting to ensure things run smoothly.
What happens if my Bright Horizons credits run out?
If you love the tuition and would like to book additional sessions, please go back to your Bright Horizons Back-Up Care Portal to spend more credits on virtual tuition.
If you run out of back-up care uses to exchange, you can personally purchase extra lessons via the ‘lessons’ tab on your account. Simply click ‘Buy extra lessons’.
